Facts and Statistics
Demands on Caregivers
Caregivers dedicate, on average, 20 hours per week to provide care for older persons and even more time when the older person has multiple disabilities.
Caring for an older person with disabilities can be physically demanding, particularly for older caregivers, who make up half of all caregivers.
One-third of all caregivers describe their own health as fair to poor.
Caregivers often indicate they are not sure they will "out-survive " the people for whom they are caring; thus, there are often two "at risk" persons in the making: the caregiver and the person cared for.
Considering assisted living or nursing home care?
A recent survey conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health found that nearly 60% of the population was unfamiliar with alternatives to nursing home care that might exist within the community. Adding to the problem, if they were faced with the tough decision of needing help for a loved one, nearly 80% don't know where to go to get independant guidance for choosing that care.
As the number of older Americans, especially those age 85+, continues to increase, it is estimated that the number of people who need assistance will double by the year 2010. No doubt there are many people who need help but don't know where to turn.
One of Seniors First's primary missiions is that of providing
Placer County seniors, their caregivers and loved ones with resources and
options as well as offering guidance to those who are faced with gathering
information and investigating housing alternatives.
